WALLA WALLA, Wash.—(June 5, 2008)—Substance, recently awarded the distinction of “Coolest Wine Label” by Seattle magazine, is a joint venture between Waters Winery and Gramercy Cellars of Walla Walla, WA. The wines were created to showcase single varietals from Washington State in an educational manner and at approachable prices.
Its striking label design, inspired by the periodic table of elements, makes it easy to recognize the many grape varietals being grown in Washington State, and the minimalist approach to winemaking demonstrates each varietal’s distinguishing characteristics.
Earlier this year, Substance released its 2006 vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon (Cs), Malbec (Mb) and Merlot (Me). This summer marks the introduction of its first whites:
Ch (Chardonnay, 2007) $18
Full-bodied, classic Chardonnay, but balanced with acid, making it a refreshing food wine; terrific with lobster, pasta and chicken—anything cooked with butter. Flavors of ripe melon, baked apple and fig, complemented by new French oak.
Pg (Pinot Gris, 2007) $14
This is how Pinot Gris—or “Grigio,” basically an albino Pinot Noir!—is supposed to taste: Minerals, citrus, melon and a touch of honey balanced with intense acidity and a long finish. Goes great with foods enhanced with lemon or lime.
Re (Riesling, 2007) $18
Easily mistaken for a German Riesling (but without a long, hard-to-pronounce name), this intense, dry wine shows flavors of melon, citrus, apricot and sweet Georgia peaches, with great acidity. Drink it with anything, especially smoked salmon or foods seasoned with ginger, coriander, or caramelized onions.
