Underground Cellar Utilizes Earth’s Natural Temperature Control for Ideal Wine Storage

SEATTLE, Wash. – (June 4, 2008) – It’s the modern oenophile’s quandary: “Where do I safely squirrel away my 1995 Chateau Latour for another decade or two?” A British company presents Seattle with an elegant, exciting solution that is both innovative and practical, the Spiral Cellar.

The Spiral Cellar is ideal for local enthusiasts who have been amassing a library of wine but feel their current storage options aren’t up to the task. The unique, cutting-edge design provides the ideal environment for storing wine—temperature- and humidity-controlled and light- and vibration-free. As an added bonus, the cellar can be installed into almost any home or building’s ground floor in as little as five days.

Accessed through an attractive wooden or glass door in the floor, the interior is lined with recessed modules for convenience and optimum use of space, and the beautiful spiral staircase puts the wine within easy arm’s reach.

The cellar utilizes the insulation from its own construction and as well as the earth’s natural temperature regulation, so no mechanical cooling or heating is required inside the cellar.

Cellars are offered in four depths, ranging from 6 ½ feet to 9 ¾ feet, capable of storing from 1,000 to 1,600 standard size bottles. In addition to performing all surveying and engineering assessments, Spiral Cellars also procures and manages the required permits associated with the construction. Even locations with a high water table do not present a problem, thanks to the cellar’s .059-inch-thick waterproof liner.

Scott and Kathy Dennis of Redmond, Wash., became the first U.S. customers to have a Spiral Cellar added to their home and helped convince the company to launch in Seattle.

“I had a terrible time finding a private cellar that would serve my needs but wouldn’t take up an entire room of my house,” said Dennis. “When I found them on the internet I basically begged them and said ‘why don’t you try it here in Seattle? We have a great wine region here.’”

Spiral Cellars Director, Lucy Hargreaves, agreed. “We always knew we wanted to branch out into the U.S. market and Seattle is an ideal location,” said Hargreaves. “We looked at several factors like climate, demographics and the economy when determining the best place to start, and Seattle was it.”

Already there are three Spiral Cellars in Washington State with another six slated for installation in 2008.

The cost of installation begins at $32,000: Not for every consumer, but to those who consider their wine collection priceless, it’s certainly worth raising a glass to. (A 2004 Quilaceda Creek, perhaps?)

For over 25 years, Spiral Cellars Ltd. has been dedicated to the supply, delivery and installation of prefabricated concrete wine cellars. Originally developed by George Harnois in 1978, the spiral cellar combines easy access and maximum space efficiency with modern and beautiful design. With over 10,000 cellars worldwide, the Spiral Cellar is the perfect solution for modern home wine storage. Spiral Cellars Ltd. is based in the United Kingdom and will be launching in the USA in 2008. For more information visit www.spiralcellars.com.
